You want the ball to fly lower and spin more with the same iron.

What I’ve just described is called a knockdown shot. A knockdown shot doesn’t go any shorter than your normal shot, just lower (good for into the wind shots).  When playing a knockdown shot you need less hand rotation and more body rotation through your shots.  If you are trying to play this shot and the ball rises, or balloons, that indicates that you are too 'handsy'- through the ball.

When playing a knockdown shot correctly the shot should stay on a more constant trajectory, but lower than it normally would.  And to hit effective knockdown shots the setup is critical.  What you need to do is play the ball further back in your stance and put more weight on your left side at address.  You should have about 60 to 70% of your weight on your front foot.

Having this setup helps you to hit the ball with a downward blow, and your club should strike the ball first and then the ground.  When playing this shot you need to have a slightly shorter backswing than you normally would and your follow-through should finish low, to hit the ball low.   When you get to impact with this shot you need to be aggressive.

Practice this shot a lot and see how you go.  It’s a great shot to have in your bag, especially when you are under pressure or are playing in windy conditions.
